Shortly after the 2010 Haitian earthquake that devastated the nation, I traveled with Seattle resident David Pierre-Louis, who was searching for his mother.

What followed was an incredible story of reconnecting with his mother, perseverance, setbacks, and ultimately, success. David managed to rally a group of dedicated volunteers to travel to Haiti with him, raised thousands of dollars in relief aid, helped rebuild his mother’s house, and came up with a neighborhood community center proposal all by himself. Many more events have transpired in the intervening period but David continues his mission of rebuilding and fostering a sense of Haitian identity among himself and the diaspora.
